NPS Visits Dimmit County, Cotulla, and Pearsall
Dr. Susan Boyle and Mike Taylor of the National Park Service’s National Trails System - Intermountain Region Office visited Dimmit County in early November. They were escorted by Camino Real de los Tejas NHT Association Vice-President, Richard G. Santos. Meeting with the NPS and association representatives were Commissioner, Mike Uriegas; Chamber of Commerce member, Paula Seydle; County Planner, Ernesto Flores; MRGDC, Mario Chavez; and Zeke Romero of El Nacimiento del Camino Real. They first met to discuss five sites that may be eligible for inclusion in the NPS’ Comprehensive Management Plan. The sites discussed were: 1) the Presidio Road Crossing at the Nueces River, 2) the Espantosa Creek Crossing on FM 1433, 3) Midway Park and, 5) Carrizo Creek. The four water-way crossings are documented sites along the Camino Real de los Tejas used from 1690 onward. The Old Dimmit County jail, which is destined to become a museum of local history, was discussed as possibly being designated a Camino Real Interpretive Center.
“COMAL SETTLEMENT” ON FM 482 in Comal County, Texas
On October 9, 2010, members of the Comal County Historical Commission (Laura West and Sami Devillier), Comal County Genealogy Society (Michael and Connie Krause), and the Selma Historical Foundation (Jean Heide) toured a section of El Camino Real de los Tejas (FM 482) in Comal County. This section of El Camino Real de los Tejas includes the old “Comal Settlement,” which contains several historic sites along the route. Some of the farms have been in the area for over 100 years. A second trip on Saturday, October 17, took place with Selma Historical Foundation members Jean Heide, and Connie and Devany Lieber. The purpose of the trips was to “inventory” and “document” some of the historical sites along El Camino Real de los Tejas as new industries have moved to the area since the City of Schertz recently incorporated it into their ETJ. It has also been rumored that the old road will be widened in the near future to accommodate the heavier truck traffic resulting from the new industrial sites. Along that route are several historic drainage culverts that date back to 1915 that would be “lost” to a new, wider road; more reason for concern about the local history there.
Texas Education Agency hosts statewide Videoconference on El Camino Real de los Tejas
On October 5, Texas Education Agency - Region 7 sponsored the first ever “Traveling El Camino Real de los Tejas NHT Program,” which brought students, teachers and professionals together via videoconference to present and share their knowledge about the oldest trail in Texas.
El Camino Real Wins Support from NPS - RTCA for Trail Project in Poteet, Texas
The Rivers, Trails, and Conservation Assistance program of the National Park Service has awarded its support to El Camino Real de los Tejas NHT Association for the creation of two miles of non-motorized trailway in Poteet, Texas. We are excited about this first-ever creation of linear trailway for El Camino Real, and look forward to many similar projects in the future.
