Spanish Governor's Palace Hard Hat Tours

February 11, 2010

The public is invited to a special tour of the renovations taking place at the Spanish Governor’s Palace located at 105 Plaza de Armas.  The tours will take place Friday, February 12 at 11:30 a.m. and Saturday, February 13 at 10:00 a.m. The cost for the tours is $25 per person.

Participants will have an opportunity to tour the building and learn how historians, architects, and archaeologists have worked together to preserve its historic integrity.  The tour will include presentations by the architect Thom Robey and the contractor Mike Boyle.

Funded through the City’s 2007 Bond Program, the Spanish Governor’s Palace will receive a new roof and electrical upgrades. This is an opportunity for the community to learn about the history of the building and gain an appreciation for the Spanish Colonial architecture before the collection is re-installed in the Palace’s rooms.

Tours are limited to persons age 16 and older.  Due to limited space on the tours, interested persons are asked to contact Charlotte Boord at 210-207-3677 or charlotte.boord@sanantonio.gov to reserve a spot.  Participants are asked to dress appropriately for a construction site (wear flat, closed toe shoes) and not bring large bags, purses or backpacks on the tour.  Please call for details for handicap accessibility availability. The tours will start promptly so participants are asked to be on time.

Completed in 1749, this year marks the 261st Anniversary of this beautiful historic site. Originally called the Presidio San Antonio de Bejar, the Spanish Governor’s Palace is all that remains of the garrison that helped bring security and safety for Spanish colonists to the region.  It was purchased by the City in 1930 and restored in the Spanish Colonial style.

Visit www.sanantonio.gov/dtops/spangovpal.asp for updates on the construction and re-opening of the museum.  You can follow the Spanish Governor’s Palace on Facebook and Twitter.
